OT: Another big bill heading to clubs if Pc Plod has his way

FROM THE LINCOLNSHIRE ECHO:

The future of Lincoln City could be put in jeopardy by plans to make clubs pay their own policing costs.

The Imps could be facing a charge of up to £190,000 per season under new proposals to make clubs pay the entire policing cost for match days.

Currently, clubs only pay for policing inside the ground, but the Association of Chief Police Officers has called for clubs to also pay for policing outside their grounds.

Last financial year, Lincoln City made a profit of just £822, and club bosses say any new charges would have a big impact.

Imps chief executive Dave Roberts said: "It would have a massive effect. You are looking at raising ticket prices or we would have to reduce the playing budget.

"We pay quite a lot of money already and also bring a lot of revenue into the city.

"Our contribution to the city should not be underestimated.

"We must pay about £750,000 in rates and taxes per year."

In the 2007/08 season, Lincolnshire Police spent £203,600 on policing all county football matches, but were only able to reclaim £9,816 from clubs.

What gives the police any right to charge a business for policing? Many businesses generate the need for policing such as animal testing facilities, etc. But I'm sure those companies dont pay for the policing of animal rights protestors or whatever policing is required. Most companies pay for their own security in house and thats all that is needed. Why should football be any different? I think the police presence and influence of kick off times is way over the top in the majority of cases. So why should football clubs have to foot the bill for something that is not even necessary much of the time?

Agreed.  When was the last time anyone genuinely saw the need for police en mass at Carrow Road?  A few around as a deterrent fair enough but most of the security could be done by the stewards/security staff clubs already employ.

The Kid's are o.k, at the Horse & Dray.
