Limit on Squad Sizes.

Should clubs be restricted to a certain number of contracted professionals?

If yes , how many?

What about foreign players?

I think there should be a restriction on both counts. IMO this would develop the home countries players and allow us all  to compete better in European and world cup competitions.

Just thinking about other things to take my mind off the fact that we wont see any league footy for 3 months. It`s going to be a long summer!!!

Re: Limit on Squad Sizes.

no there shouldn't be a limit on the number of pros at a club because I can see no benefi to it what so ever...

In response to foreign players I think maybe instead there should be a rule for example saying there must be at least 5 players from the academy, but even then when does that rule stop, i.e. some lower league clubs cannot afford and do not have academies...

Calm down, it's not good for the blood pressure...

Re: Limit on Squad Sizes.

I think there should be a limit on squad sizes, because at the moment Premiership teams can buy as many players as they like, which means that all the top quality gets sucked up by the big 4, and all the second tier players get sucked up by the rest of the premiership.

The likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal now have 30-35 top quality players in their squads.  Those players would have been playing for other Premiership teams in the past.  In order to try to compete on strength in depth, other Premiership teams have plundered the Championship, which in turn leaves Championship teams with fewer available quality players than in the past, which fuels player wage and transfer fee inflation, as Championship clubs fight over the scraps, and also a heavy reliance upon loans.

It's getting a bit busy on this fence, nigel...

Personally don't think there should be a limit. At the end of the day having a bigger squad brings it's own problems with players not happy sitting on the bench or not making the 16. Swings and roundabouts.

Except that you can loan them out and demand that they play. And next year it's an 18 not a 16. It's all swings for the big boys these days.

budge up

But apparently players ARE happy to sit around and not play as was demonstrated when GR was after at least one player in January. He was happy to have his fet up and collect his money without playing.

Maybe a wage cap should be enforced to with wages being made up with appearance and bonuses for the playing staff not those at home or in the stands

Surley the benefit is to the paying supporter. More talent on display and better standard of football throughout the leagues.

Teams will not give pro deals to youngsters if they are only allowed a certain amount: they will make sure they get the experienced, first team players first and then only have room for one or two teenagers.

They should reduce the number of bench "spaces" down to 3 (not increase it, as they are doing now).

Now a wage cap IS something that needs to happen

If this happened, then at least it would give lower league teams a commodity to sell on, we would be approaching something similar to the old days when lower league clubs would train up future stars, who would then be sold on to the benefit of the lower league team.  These days Man U and Arsenal are poaching 14 year olds.  Wasn't there a Notts County youth who was tapped up by Chelsea ?

In some ways I think Chase got it right on the way he had the wage structure, as at the time I believe we had the lowest wage structure but the best win bonus in the league. If you wanted to earn more you put in the effort.
